The great social media crash of 2021

It’s currently 4 October, 11:55pm in Spain where I currently find myself and Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp have been down for a while.

Given the money and politics involved, I’m sure they’ll figure out what’s wrong and get it back up but, regardless of what happens, I wanted to drop a piece of advice that I always give to the artists I work with: build up your mailing list!!!!

As you can see, social media can disappear on a whim and take with it all of your fans and their respective data you had access to. You don’t own any of that. So make sure you do all you can to encourage them to sign up to your mailing list so you can actually retain a way of communicating should all social media hell break loose.

I’m not gonna lie, it’s not easy to get people to do it. They might love you but can’t be bothered. So do come up with ideas to encourage them to take action, ie. running a competition, offering a freebie, etc. But obviously, make it appealing and unique.

I know, I know, there’s still TikTok, Twitter and f*ck knows what else but it’s the same principle. What if it all comes crashing down?!

That’s it from me for now, I’m going back to my cold beer and plate of Iberian ham.

See you on the other side!

Holla!
